Transportation That Would Make George Washington

As I look at my gas gauge in my car, I notice that I am almost back at 'empty' when I just put $15 in my tank. Sure $15 isn't much, but when you're a starving student like me, $15 seems like a small fortune. Poor George Washington, he just doesn't go very far anymore.
Now I have a Ford Taurus, so if I'm feeling the hit driving a sedan, I can't imagine driving an SUV.
Are we entering a time where SUV's aren't cool anymore?
When I finally get over the initial shock of my money literally going down the drain, I notice my surroundings. More and more students are traveling on two wheels, and I'm not talking about bikes!
That's right, the dawn of the SCOOTERS has arrived. They've come a long way since the traditional moped. With engines ranging from 50cc's to over 150cc's, riders can scoot just about anywhere.
For the everyday commuter in an urban area, a 50cc scooter will have just enough power to get you in and out of traffic. Did I mention scooters in this range get up to 115 MPG?
That makes all those 'Washingtons' go farther now doesn't it?
If you're anything like me, you'll probably want more power. After all, with savings like those I'd want to expand my horizons beyond institutions of higher education. That being said, a scooter with a 150cc engine would reach speeds of 60 plus MPH, and still give you more than 80MPG!
Road trip anyone?
What about safety? Yes, you are on two wheels, and forget about air bags. However, they make full- face helmets, and body suits that protect you in the event of a crash. I can't speak for every student in America, but as far as I'm concerned, I'd be willing to take my chances for some extra dough in my pocket. Proper safety equipment could run the new rider around $300+ however, this is your life we are talking about! I'd rather spend a pretty penny upfront than thousands of medical bills later.
College is already expensive, and with tuition, fees, and books on the rise, gas is the last thing I want to think about.
Can you say 'student loans?'
Now with tons of scooter manufacturers out there such as: Honda, Yamaha, Vespa, and Genuine Scooter, how will any student decide? The key is to narrow down your primary reasons for ditching the four-wheeled gas guzzler to it's 2-wheeled counterpart. I would choose the highest quality scooter that I could afford while still achieving the highest MPG that I could get. A key point to remember, is that the higher CC's your engine has, the lower the MPG you get, but speed is important when dodging traffic. So make sure that you have enough power to accelerate your way out of a sticky situation.
In conclusion, college is expensive, and it's never going to get any cheaper. Scooters are becoming more popular options for that daily commute, and with options that suite everyones tastes, there is no reason why everyone shouldn't invest in one of these bad boys.
With savings that would make Benjamin Franklin proud, coupled with ever growing gas prices, scooters have me more than reconsidering my ride.
